FAQs

How often does my pet need grooming?

Although some breeds of dog with continuously growing hair need grooming every four to six weeks, every breed benefits from regular grooming to keep their coats healthy and help avoid skin problems. How often your pet needs grooming depends on their breed and how well you maintain their coat between visits (don’t forget, we sell an excellent range of grooming tools you can use at home in our shop). For further information and advice, call the salon and speak to one of our professional groomers or book a free consultation.

How long will it take to groom my pet?

We will advise you on the length of your appointment during our consultation, however typically a groom will take around two hours.

The exact length of time taken will depend on the condition of your pet's coat and their behaviour. Some animals - such as the very old, very young or very nervous – need a little extra time or regular breaks.

Will you groom an elderly pet?

Professional grooming takes a significant amount of time - a big dog, for example, could be required to stand for a groom for up to 3 hours.  As animals age, they lose their ability to stand for long periods, and so we need to make special considerations to ensure that they are safe and comfortable during their grooming sessions. At your free consultation, we will work with you to come up with an appropriate care plan for your older pet.

What if I am running late or need to cancel my appointment?

If you need to cancel your appointment, please allow at least 24 hours’ notice so that your appointment can be offered to someone else. For cancellations with less than 24 hours notice, we charge a £10 late cancellation fee (payable at your next grooming appointment).

Missed appointments which are not cancelled will incur a charge of 50% of the grooming fee at the next appointment.

If you are late for an appointment by more than 15 minutes, we will have to cancel your appointment as it affects the rest of the day’s schedule. We will charge a missed appointment fee of 50% of the regular groom.

Late collection will also result in an additional charge of £10 per pet.

We reserve the right to request pre-payment at the time of booking.

What are your opening hours?

Dog grooming: Monday- Friday, from 9am to 5pm.

Cat grooming: The first Saturday of the month, by appointment

How much will it cost?

Prices for each treatment will vary depending on your pet’s specific breed, coat type and requirements. We can provide an estimate either over the phone or in-person.

Please note that the price quoted is based on the assumption that you will bring your pet to us in reasonable condition, and that they are within the standard size for the breed, and that they are happy to be groomed.

A final quote will be provided after an initial free consultation.

Will my pet go in a crate or cage?

Yes, your pet will be given its own cage at Doggie and Moggie, so that they have a safe place to rest at various points during the grooming process (most pets take this opportunity to enjoy a nap!). The cages are positioned in the salon itself, so that your pet can see our groomers. Any special requirements should be discussed at the consultation.

What equipment do I need at home?

You will need a brush and comb for your pet’s coat type and should, ideally, use this on a weekly basis to remove knots and debris from the coat. Our groomers are happy to offer advice about suitable grooming tools and techniques, and take you through our range of grooming products available to purchase in our shop.

What should I do to prepare my pet for a grooming session?

Please ensure your pet has an opportunity to go to the toilet before they arrive at Doggie and Moggie so that they are comfortable during their time in the salon. There are areas on site where your dog can be exercised before or after their appointment, with waste bins provided. Please do not allow your dog to urinate or defecate on the premises.

If your appointment is at a time when you would normally feed your pet, then feeding them a small amount will help to ensure they are comfortable and content. However, a large meal is best avoided before grooming.

Drinking water will be provided in the salon.

When should I bring my puppy for their first grooming session?

Introducing your puppy to grooming at an early age is important to ensure they learn to tolerate and enjoy grooming throughout their lives. Our puppy grooming service is suitable for puppies from as early as two weeks after their first vaccinations, up to the age of six months.

Doggie and Moggie offer a free 30-minute consultation to determine the best care plan for your puppy and to help get them acquainted with the many sights, sounds and smells of the salon.

When your puppy is ready for their first grooming session, we ask you to stay with your puppy for this initial appointment. This is so you can help keep their puppy calm and reassured, and so that you can ask the groomer questions and pick up some helpful care tips for your new dog.

What if my dog or cat has fleas and other parasites?

We endeavour to offer a healthy, clean environment for all the animals that visit us; please ensure that your pet is up to date with flea/tick and worming treatments, along with vaccinations or three yearly Titre Tests.

If you discover your pet has parasites, please cancel your appointment. If fleas or ticks are discovered on your pet while they’re at the salon, we will contact you immediately to discuss treatment options. If you cannot be reached, our groomers will treat the infestation as they see fit. An additional charge will be incurred for this service.

What if my bitch is in season or pregnant?

For the safety and comfort of your own dog and for other dogs, please do not bring your bitch into the salon if she is in season or pregnant.

Do you use muzzles?

Please let us know at the time of booking your consultation if you believe your pet is likely to bite. We prefer not to use muzzles and believe that, with correct handling, muzzling is not necessary. However, if your pet is threatening to bite, we will use a muzzle for as short a time as possible to remove the risk.
